Rear-yard tree removal in Elkridge, where a 35-inch gate decides the machine and builder-planted stock is now big enough to matter.

Severn Tree Removal quotes tree removal in Elkridge off one measurement more often than any other: the width of the rear gate. Almost everything we take down in this part of Howard County stands behind the house rather than in front of it, in a fenced yard reached through a single opening, and that opening decides the machine.

The trees themselves are mostly the ones the builder planted when the house was finished. They are tall enough now to reach a roof, set within a few feet of a foundation, a fence line or a neighbor’s patio, and they come down very differently from a tree standing in open lawn.

We have been doing this work for more than twenty years, and the estimate visit is free. We walk the property, put the scope in writing before a crew is booked, and the crew you meet at the estimate is the crew that shows up and does the final rake-out.

Builder-planted stock, fifteen to twenty-five years in the ground

Worker walking a compact tracked stump grinder through a narrow rear gate between two Elkridge townhouse rows, the machine sized to the opening.

Elkridge housing is young. 59.8% of units were built in 2000 or later and 37.5% went up between 2010 and 2019, while only 11.3% date to 1979 or earlier. The yard canopy tracks the construction almost exactly, which puts most of the trees we are called about at roughly fifteen to twenty-five years old.

That age band is when a builder-planted tree starts generating phone calls. It has the height and the diameter at breast height to damage something, its root plate has spread under a driveway or a patio slab, and whatever structural fault it was planted with has had two decades to widen.

The species that came with the subdivision

Callery pear, sold for years as the Bradford, went into subdivisions built through the 1990s and 2000s in large numbers, and Maryland has prohibited its sale from January 15, 2026. The reason a big one fails is built into it: co-dominant stems rising from nearly the same point, with included bark in the union instead of sound wood.

Once a pear that size splits, it is finished as a landscape tree even with half of it still standing. Crown reduction is worth doing on a young one; on a twenty-year-old with a torn union it is not, and we say that at the estimate rather than sell a pruning cycle that ends in a removal anyway.

Ash left standing after the borer

Emerald ash borer has been established in Maryland since 2003 and kills a large ash within about three years. What it leaves is the part that concerns us: brittle standing deadwood that will not hold a climber and sheds limbs unpredictably under rigging load.

A dead ash in a fenced back yard is the one removal we tell people not to hold over to next season. We take those from an aerial lift or a crane rather than out of the tree, in line with ANSI Z133, and we price them that way from the first visit.

Townhouse rows and the 35-inch gate

Attached single-family units — townhouse and duplex rows — make up 36.3% of the Elkridge housing stock, against 31.2% detached. 62.3% of the 9,339 occupied units are owner-occupied, so the rear yard usually belongs to the person we are quoting, with a homeowners association holding the common open space behind it.

On a row like that the whole job turns on one number. The standard rear gate here runs around 35 inches wide, and gate width decides which machine can reach the trunk. Everything else about the removal — the crew size, the day count, the price — follows from that.

What fits through 35 inches

Our compact tracked equipment is sized to pass a standard back-yard gate, and the stump grinder is chosen on the same basis, because a side gate is often the only route from the street to the stump. Where the opening is wide enough and the ground is firm, a rear-yard removal and grind is a one-day job, with protection matting down over the lawn and any hardscape on the route.

Grinding is its own access question. The grinder has to reach the stump and then has to get the grindings back out, so we agree up front whether the arisings stay on site as backfill or leave with the brush, and we have utilities marked before any wheel touches the ground within the critical root zone of a tree we are not removing.

Where the gate is narrower than the machine, we do not force it. Pulling a fence section and resetting it afterward is usually the cheapest way in, and it goes on the written estimate as a line item rather than turning up as a surprise on the morning of the work.

When no machine reaches the trunk

Some units leave no ground route at all: an end unit behind a retaining wall, a run of fence shared with two neighbors, a trunk tight against the back wall. Those come down by sectional dismantling, lowered piece by piece on rigging lines, because there is no drop zone to fell into.

Where the yard cannot be worked from the ground, we set a crane on the street or in the parking bay and lift the wood out over the roofline. That needs parking coordinated with a board or a property manager, which we arrange when the job is scheduled rather than the evening before.

Grounds work behind the larger buildings

Not all of the fenced-in tree work here is single-family. 19.7% of Elkridge units sit in structures of 20 or more, and 16.8% in structures of 50 or more, which puts a real share of the local canopy on managed grounds rather than in private yards.

That work is scheduled differently. We plan around property managers, homeowners association boards and resident parking, quote the whole stand rather than one tree at a time where it makes sense, and keep the mats and the drop area clear of the routes people actually walk.

The older core, and the ground underneath it

Elkridge is not uniformly new. 7.5% of units predate 1960 and 2.7% predate 1940, concentrated toward the river and the US 1 corridor, and the trees standing over that older fabric are correspondingly bigger. The community was founded early in the eighteenth century, and the Thomas Viaduct, the 1835 stone arch railroad bridge over the Patapsco, still stands at its edge.

Work there is a different quote from work in a subdivision: larger diameters, tighter lots, more overhead utility, and the Avalon area of Patapsco Valley State Park adjoining the community along the river. We budget a longer walk-through for those properties and we do not price them off photographs.

Two provinces, one city

Elkridge straddles the Atlantic Seaboard Fall Line. 63.8% of the census-designated place lies in the Piedmont Plateau Province and 36.2% in the Atlantic Coastal Plain Province, which is why the species mix here is genuinely mixed rather than uniformly Piedmont.

The split shows up most in the stump work. Surface geology samples as 63.3% Cretaceous Patuxent, Arundel Clay and Patapsco formations — gravel, sand and clay, and soft digging for a grinder — against 21.1% Relay quartz diorite and 15.1% Baltimore Complex metagabbro and gabbro, which are not soft and where shallow rock can hold a root plate tight.

Wet ground and storm calls

Arundel Clay is heavy and drains poorly. Where it sits at the surface, saturated ground after rain limits where a crane or an aerial lift can be set, and it raises the windthrow risk on shallow-rooted trees, which is why a tree that shifted in a storm is worth looking at rather than assuming it settled.

Elkridge sits in NWS forecast zone MDZ506, Central and Southeast Howard. A destructive-tier severe thunderstorm warning on August 10, 2026 named the community in its path and more than 25,500 BGE customers lost power that day. We hold 24-hour response for storm damage, fallen trees and trees resting on a structure.

Getting an accurate quote from a photo of the gate

The fastest route to a firm number here is to measure the rear gate post to post at its narrowest point and send that figure with three photographs: the gate, the path from the driveway or parking bay, and the base of the tree. That is usually enough for us to say which machine is coming and how the day runs.

There is no charge for the estimate visit and none for a second look at a tree you are unsure about. Every removal carries written inclusions — brush chipped, trunk rounds, stump and grindings all settled before scheduling — and the contract carries our Maryland Licensed Tree Expert license number, which COMAR 08.07.07.03D requires of anyone doing this work for hire.

What the county regulates, and what it does not

Homeowners often expect the Forest Conservation Act to be the obstacle, and on a single residential lot it usually is not. Howard County exempts development activity on a single lot smaller than 40,000 square feet from the forest conservation program, provided the area is not already covered by an approved Forest Conservation Plan.

On a newer Elkridge subdivision the binding restriction is far more often a recorded forest conservation easement, on the lot itself or on the common open space behind it, platted with the subdivision and sitting in the land records. We check for one before quoting, and where a Declaration of Intent or a review by the Howard County Department of Planning and Zoning is the right route, we handle that routing before the crew is scheduled.

Trees near the street and near the wires

The Roadside Tree Law turns on where the trunk stands, not on who planted the tree. If the trunk is inside the public right-of-way, the work needs a Roadside Tree Care Permit from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service, and we obtain it as part of the job rather than leaving it with the property owner.

Trees fully in the county right-of-way belong to the county: the Howard County Bureau of Highways elevates limbs, clears limbs down in the road and removes dead trees there, on 410-313-7450 during business hours, though stump grinding after one of their removals may take up to a year depending on backlog. A limb resting on a power line is Baltimore Gas and Electric’s call before it is anyone else’s — report it on 1-800-685-0123 and keep people away from it.
